Jeb Summers had risen early. He slept little.

Last night he had scratched another drawing on the wall. A hanging man with turned-up toes. It pleased him well enough but his albino face was sombre.

A burial to take place. The white rat carefully wrapped in a fine piece of silk brocade lining that he had ripped from the inside of Laidlaw’s dressing gown.

Dirk Martins had winced at such desecration but considering the Smiler had just killed a man, he could hardly take much of the high ground.

And he’d made a terrible mess of what should have been, when all was said and done, a simple strangulation.

The dwarf looked down at the tidy, dignified package he’d made to hold his best friend. Death without dignity is a terrible thing. Jeb had already dug a little grave in the corner of the cave, with a rough cross to add once the hole was filled in once more.

His eyes filled again with tears as he laid the rat down tenderly and then began to scrape the earth over.

Two more to go. Tobacco and the holy man.

God rest the wee beastie.
